The Legato Bern-Odessa was founded in 2003 with the objective to support the mutual exchange between the Berne Music School (Switzerland) and the Stolyarsky Special Music School in Odessa (Ukraine). The organisation has a branch in Bonn (Germany).

Legato follows the principle of mutual support. We support and maintain partnerships in culture and education between the towns of Berne and Odessa,  and between Switzerland and Ukraine in general .

Our activities aim at enhancing cultural exchange between the Ukraine and Switzerland. For that purpose we cooperate with other organisations with similar goals.

We support youth exchange programmes as well as knowledge and competence transfer in art, culture and education. We launch and fund music projects (choir, orchestra, ensemles) or career developments in music, pedagogy and art education.

Our current projects are hands-on and comprise:

Our cooperation between Odessa and Bern dates back to the international ESTA conference (European String Teachers Association) in Odessa in 2000. The conference was hosted at the Stolyarsky Special Music School - the legendary talent factory (David Oistrakh, Nathan Milstein u.w.).

The conference was initiated by Werner Schmitt, board member of ESTA and then director of the Berne Music School. The most pleasant collaboration led to a shared desired to organize regular exchange projects between the two schools. The partnership has since been enhanced to support projects across Odessa and Bern and even beyond these towns.
